Iraq Porn Vendors a Sign of Change in the Nation

August 23, 2010

Iraq (ChattahBox) – It may not be the usual sign of progress, but there is no doubt that the sale of porn on sidewalks in Iraq points to change.

RAW posted an interesting story today, talking about Jassim Hanoun, a 22-year-old movie vendor on the streets of Baghdad. He is one of many to pop up in recent months, after the newly found industry disappeared as insurgents ran rampant in 2008, targeting the “immoral” with suicide bombings.

The fact that Hollywood films, porn DVD’s and modern music are sold openly in the streets show a major shift in security. But it also signals the changes in the government, which is still butting heads on how to best move forward.

It also shows that there is a touch of modernism in public life, which was before unknown in that part of the Arab nation. It is the same modernization you see in the way the youth of the country have begun to dress, and the spread of the Internet to more homes in the country.

All of this is a small comfort in a time of continued raging war, and Iraq’s future is as uncertain as ever. Not only is the government deadlocked, but there is some question over whether or not the U.S. will be asked to stay with more support, as we have handed over all major operations to the Iraqi security forces.

But the small changes in daily life point to a larger trend of continued stability, and decreasing fear in the population, one which we can hope will continue.
