Sweden Reopens Rape Case Against WikiLeaks’ Assange, Adds Molestation ‘Sexual Component’

September 1, 2010

(ChattahBox)—After a Swedish warrant for rape issued in absentia, then withdrawn, with non-specific molestation charges remaining against WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange, now authorities have reinstated the rape case and are talking of adding a “sexual component” to the molestation charge. Assange appeared for questioning on Monday. And on Wednesday, Sweden’s head prosecutor announced the expanded investigation against Assange. The WikiLeaks whistleblowing provocateur has been a thorn in the side of U.S. military authorities, after releasing thousands of sensitive documents on the Afghanistan War, which the Pentagon says places our soldiers and Afghan informants in harm’s way. Assange claims the Swedish allegations of rape and molestation are a “dirty trick” in retaliation for his Pentagon documents dump. But the two women making the allegations against Assange, are pressing forward.

According to CNN’s report, head prosecutor Marianne Ny now believes the allegations merit a rape investigation.

“There is reason to believe that a crime has been committed,” read a statement from Marianne Ny, Sweden’s director of public prosecutions. “Considering information available at present, my judgment is that the classification of the crime is rape.” […]

An ongoing investigation about a separate charge of molestation will be extended, she added, but the charge will also be escalated to include a sexual component.

The molestation charge was previously equivalent to a non-sexual charge of harassment, but it will now come under the heading of sexual coercion and sexual molestation, which are both crimes, she said.

Assange’s lawyer, Leif Silbersky, said his client was innocent. “It’s unbelievable,” he told CNN. “We thought that this circus had ended. Now it’s happening all over again.” “He maintains that he is completely innocent,” added Silbersky.

But the attorney representing both women making the allegations, says Assange’s claims that the investigations is a vast conspiracy and a “dirty trick” is “complete nonsense.”

Soon after the sexual related charges came to light, Assange released a confidential CIA memo discussing a scenario, wherein the U.S. would be viewed as an “exporter of terrorism.”

The WikiLeaks founder and former hacker, also intends to release an additional 15,000 pages of sensitive Pentagon documents in a couple of weeks.
