Rescue of Chile Miners On The Horizon After Long Months of Waiting
October 4, 2010
Chile (ChattahBox World News) – After months of the agonizingly slow process towards a group of trapped Chilean miners that defied the odds and survived a mine collapse, rescuers now say that the drill is less than 48 hours away from reaching them.
The Guardian is reporting that once the drill breaks through, it will be another week to ten days before they are out. But there is finally an end in sight to their incredible ordeal.
It was two months ago that the 33 miners were feared dead, after days of searching following the collapse of the mine they were working. But, defying all odds, each one was found to be alive, though some were slightly injured.
Rescuers initially created a system that allowed them to be sent supplies through a small tube, were provisions and cameras for messages to family and friends were lowered.
Now, the process of widening a hole which can be lined with metal and the miners can be pulled up is nearly completed.
The case of the miners has brought focus to the problem of instability and dangerous conditions in the country, which leaders and officials have promised to address.
