British Heroin Addict Accepts Cash in Exchange for Vasectomy
October 18, 2010
(ChattahBox Science News) – A British heroin addict is the first U.K. recipient of a cash payment in exchange for getting a vasectomy from American charity Project Prevention, which gives cash to addicts who agree to be sterilized. The 38-year-old Brit accepted 200 Pounds Sterling from the group following his vasectomy, reports the UK Telegraph.A North Carolina woman who adopted four children from a crack-addicted mother started the charity in an attempt to halt the number of babies being born to drug addicts. Some detractors have accused her of exploiting the vulnerable or participating in “social engineering,” but when criticized for her “cash-for-sterilization” plan, she simply responds that anyone who thinks people should take drugs and have kids should get in line to adopt those babies, the Telegraph reports.
Project Prevention has paid 3,500 American addicts who have agreed to either sterilization or long-term birth control, including IUDs or contraceptive implants. Once an addict contacts the charity, he or she has 30 days to decide whether to participate in the program.
