British Retirees Finally Released by Somali Pirates After Year-Long Nightmare
November 15, 2010
Somalia (ChattahBox World News)—-Over a year ago, Somali pirates invaded Paul and Rachel Chandler’s yacht as the British couple slept quietly, beginning a 388-day horror that finally ended yesterday with their long-awaited release, the Christian Science Monitor reports.
The Chandlers previously told the Daily Telegraph that they had been “caged like animals” during the ordeal, and that Rachel Chandler lost a tooth after a pirate hit her with a rifle butt, the CS Monitor notes. The couple is being evaluated by medical personnel in Somalia before being relocated to Kenya.
Immediately following the kidnapping, the pirates demanded 4 million Pounds Sterling (approximately $6.5 million) but the British government does not pay ransoms to terrorists, and the Chandlers’ family did not have such a sum. Somali elders report that the pirates eventually received about the equivalent of $750,000 in ransom before releasing the couple, but it’s unclear what the source was of that payment, CS Monitor reports.
