WikiLeaks: Iran Has Developed Technology to Make Enriched Uranium, Which Could Lead to Nuclear Bombs

January 21, 2011

(ChattahBox World News)—A recently-released WikiLeaks cable indicates that U.S. officials believe Iran possesses centrifuge operations, offering the country the “technical ability to produce highly enriched uranium”— a crucial element to potentially creating nuclear bombs, the UK Guardian reports. The news, which came from a meeting of international nuclear experts in Vienna in 2009, was based on one American representative’s diplomatic cable, later leaked.

The cables indicate that Iran has not suffered from a nuclear standpoint, despite international sanctions against the country, the Guardian notes. The leaked information also reveals that Russia vowed to never allow Iran to make its own fuel for the Russian-built nuclear power station in Bushehr.

Iranian spokespeople have always claimed that the country’s nuclear program is intended to supply power and not weapons, but the leaked cables reveal that at the 2009 meeting, the UK calculated that by 2014, Iran would have amassed enough uranium hexafluoride to create 19 warheads, the Guardian reports.
