WikiLeaks: US Gave Britain’s Nuclear Secrets to Russia to Secure START Treaty

February 5, 2011

(ChattahBox World News) – Well you really can’t trust anyone with a secret anymore.  Apparently reasoning it was for a greater good, the United States apparently betrayed their closest ally, documents obtained from the WikiLeaks website by The Daily Telegraph reveal.  Allegedly the US secretly agreed to give Russia sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear secrets as part of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) arms control deal to be signed by President Barack Obama next week.  The United States and Russia both reveal to each other such information about their own arsenals. Part of the 1,400 US embassy cables published to date by the Telegraph, show the US told Russia that it would hand over the serial numbers of the Trident missiles it supplies Britain, undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.  Washington lobbied London in 2009 for permission to supply Moscow with detailed data about the performance of UK missiles, but Britain steadfastly refused, since it has such a comparatively small stockpile, the paper reported.  The original 1991 START treaty expired at the end of 2009. The new pact slashes existing warhead ceilings by 30 percent over the next 10 years and limits each side to 700 deployed long-range missiles and heavy bombers.
