Verizon Employees Gain Unauthorised Access to Obama’s Phone Records

November 21, 2008

New York (ChattahBox) — Verizon Wireless reported on Thursday that some of its employees gained unauthorized access to President-elect Barack Obama’s telephone calls and viewed his personal cell phone account. The number is not inactive and his voice mail messaged and emails were not breached. The old cell phone was a simple voice phone and was not designed for email or other data services.

President and Chief Executive of Verizon Wireless, Lowell McAdam apologised to President-elect Barack Obama. “We apologize to President-elect Obama and will work to keep the trust our customers place in us every day,” he said in a statement.

Lowell also said all the employees who had access to his account, whether authorised or not, have been put on immediate leave with pay. The company will soon impose disciplinary action against those who accessed Obama’s account improperly. The company will also evaluate the circumstances of each employee’s access to the account to determine appropriate action. The company spokesperson, Jeffery Nelson, declined to comment when he was asked what kind of information was viewed.

According to the telecom analysts, the employees have access to the billing information and could likely see the numbers a customer had called. However, there has not been any case in recent past where such a high profile number had been a part of security breach.

Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc. It will soon become the nation’s largest carrier after completing its merger with Alltel.
