Does Amazon want to buy Netflix?

July 14, 2009

(ChattahBox) — There’s a hot little acquisition rumor going around that propelled Netflix stock up more than 5% in trading yesterday. Speculation is that Amazon.com Inc. may be interested in acquiring the largest U.S. mail-order movie service. Although neither company would comment on the speculation, some analysts think it isn’t all that far-fetched. Netflix competes with Amazon.com in delivering movies over the Internet, so far streaming 12,000 movies, an area CEO Reed Hastings said in February is instrumental to the company’s long-term success. Amazon-on-Demand has 40,000 movies. Netflix also has more than 10 million subscribers, who primarily use its DVD-by-mail service.  Might just be one of those rumors to pump up a stock for a few days though, as it’s not apparent where this rumor originated from.
