Disney Announces It Will Be Buying Marvel Entertainment In $4 Billion Deal

August 31, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Disney has been recording reduced profits over the last few quarters, with a significant drop from $1.5 billion to $954 million in the last year. Their plan to fix this decrease? Buy Marvel.

Marvel has announced that Disney has bought them out in a $4 billion dollar deal that has come as a surprise to many.

The buyout will see Marvel shareholder getting $30 per share, plus 0.745 in Disney shares, equaling $50 a share for each Marvel share owned.

While this is a great turnout for shareholders, the fans are likely going to be a little harder to please.

Marvel is the company behind such hero universes as X-Men, Spiderman, and the Fantastic Four. As a Marvel lover myself, I know I will not be the only fan to worry about what this business will do to the franchise, especially with several movies prepared for release within the next two years.

But Marvel executive, Ike Perlmutter, says there is nothing on the horizon but sunshine, rainbows, and general happiness.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses. This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world,” he was quoted by the BBC.

Forgive my cynicism, but that seems like it may be easier for Perlmutter to say, considering he is the single largest shareholder in this venture.
