YouTube Rumored To Be Working Towards Online Rentals

September 3, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – YouTube, the online video viewing and sharing website owned by Google Inc., is rumored to be in the works with movie studios in order to offer online rentals.

The move would be a step to compete with various other Internet retailers, which offers the same service.

However, offering a service like this so late in the game is unlikely to create much of a buzz, especially given the fact that many people are already using companies such as Netflix for online and home rentals. Competition would be stiff.

While details on the talks are sparse, anonymous sources have said that YouTube execs are currently speaking with Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., Sony Corp., Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.. Each are already signed for advertising with the site.

YouTube has refused to comment on the rumors, but have made this statement, as quoted by The Huffington Post:

“While we don’t comment on rumor or speculation, we hope to expand on both our great relationship with movie studios and on the selection and types of videos we offer our community.”
