Disney Offers Refunds for Baby Einsteins Videos

October 24, 2009

Well junior didn’t grow up to be quite a genius, but you can get your $16 back now.  Threatened with a class-action lawsuit,Disney the makers of Baby Einstein products have not only withdrawn claims that the videos are beneficial to childhood development, but are offering to refund the $15.99 parents shelled out for up to four “Baby Einstein” DVDs per household, if they return the once ultra-popular DVDs bought between June, 2004, and September, 2009.  The popularity of Baby Einstein founded in 1997, and acquired by Disney in 2001, reached a third of all American babies from 6 months to 2 years in 2003, according to a study.  The company’s founder, Julie Aigner-Clark, was a guest of honor at President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address less than three years ago , where she earned a prominent mention in his speech.
Disney had previously dropped the word “educational” from marketing materials from the line of DVDs, books, cards and flashcards after complaints to the Federal Trade Commission that pediatricians actually advised against any screen time for small children. Disney’s announcement of new refund offers did not directly address the lawsuit threat, but Baby Einstein Company’s vice president Susan McLain told the New York Times in a statement that, “Fostering parent-child interaction always has and always will come first at The Baby Einstein Company, and we know that there is an ongoing discussion about how that interaction is best promoted.”
