Gary Kaplan, Online Gambling King Gets Four Years

November 4, 2009

(ChattahBox)–Gary Kaplan, the founder of Betonsports, a former UK online gambling enterprise, pleaded guilty to racketeering, conspiracy and other charges and was sentenced to 51 months in prison, as part of a plea agreement. Kaplan was a high-rolling online gambler entrepreneur, until he was arrested in the Dominican Republic in March 2007, for taking illegal sports wagers from U.S. customers.

The former gambling king and New York bookie will also forfeit more than $50 million in illegal proceeds obtained from taking bets from Americans. The remaining assets remaining in now frozen, Switzerland accounts would be released to Kaplan.

Since Kaplan has been in custody awaiting trial, since his arrest in 2007, he would only spend an additional year in prison.

Kaplan’s sister and brother, also pleaded guilty to similar charges and were awaiting sentencing.

David Carruthers, a former Betonsports chief executive, was arrested at a Dallas airport in 2006 and will be sentenced sentenced on January 8.

The arrests of Kaplan and others have put a dent in online gambling transactions between U.S. customers.

Michael W. Reap, acting US Attorney said of Kaplan’s sentencing, “Kaplan’s business model itself was built on a wager that the US could not and would not enforce its anti-sports book laws to reach Kaplan . . . Kaplan lost that wager.”
