JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon to Replace Geithner?

November 24, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner sure has taken his lumps in recent days, as questions arise about the terms of recent undisclosed loans made to Wall Street firms, with the economy recovering at a snail’s pace and unemployment soaring into double digits. Criticism of Geithner culminated last week with a visit to the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, where the Treasury Secretary was grilled by several Republican members. Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) told Geithner, “the public has lost all confidence in your ability to do your job.”

Now, you get the sense that his days are numbered, as possible replacements are already being floated in the media. One of those names is JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, a long-time Obama supporter and Wall Street folk hero, who has refused to pay out huge bonuses to retain or lure talent.

The New York Post has a piece out, based on a number of unnamed sources who claim that a “number of policy makers have begun mentioning Dimon as a successor to Geithner.” The Post piece may well be intended, as a trial balloon to place Dimon’s name out there to gage the reaction.

Dimon is credited with assisting the government with the collapse of both Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual, which sent ripples of fear through Wall Street last year.

The sources say, Dimon is interested in serving as Treasury Secretary, but he does not want to appear too eager to supplant Geithner. But the JPMorgan Chase CEO has been raising his public profile, of late, with a recent op-ed piece in the Washington Post critizing the theory of ‘too big to fail.’

Dimon’s name was also floated last year, as a potential candidate for the top financial post.
