Website Design Mistakes that Ruin Your Business

June 5, 2017

Thanks to tools like WordPress, anyone can design a simple website for their business. For a small business owner, this is a tempting proposition. After all, what is the point in paying a website designer hundreds or thousands of dollars to create a website when you can do it yourself?

The problem is, even though there is a wealth of information online about how the internet can help your body shop achieve a prominent position in the SERPS, website design is not as straightforward as you might think.

There are a number of pitfalls to watch out for and many of them are linked to poor website design practices. To help you avoid the falling victim, here are the main website design mistakes you need to avoid.

Interstitial Pages

Interstitial pages are very common. The problem with interstitial pages is that they are annoying. Users don’t want to see an intrusive interstitial page displaying ads. In fact, they are very likely to click away.

Google pays attention to what users want, so if your site utilizes intrusive interstitial pages and your bounce rate is high, do not be surprised if your SERPS position takes a hit.

Splash Pages

Splash pages are also intrusive. A splash page typically pops up when the user visits a site. Businesses use splash pages to promote a service or request an email address before the user continues to the page they want to see. Splash pages are annoying. They harm your SEO, so don’t use them. Instead, let users go straight to the page of their choice.

Poor Navigation

Most web users don’t have time to waste. When they visit your site, they are looking for answers or information, such as opening hours or details of a product. The last thing they want to do is waste time looking for the right page.

Website navigation needs to be simple and intuitive. Add drop-down menus at the top of each page and make sure the search button is in plain sight. If it takes more than two clicks to reach a page, give your website navigation an overhaul.

No Branding

Customers need to know they have reached the right website. Business websites should look professional and utilize existing brand styling. Include your company logo and make sure typography and colors match other online and offline content. If there are major discrepancies, you run the risk of confusing your customers.

Heavy Animation

Video, animation, and images are all important, but they will slow your website down. Customers typically click away if a website doesn’t load quickly and Google penalizes such sites in the SERPS. Optimize images and visual content using freely available online tools, so pixel counts are reduced without affecting image quality.

Too Busy

You don’t need to fill every bit if space with content. Busy websites are distracting and your message will be lost. Music and sound, in particular, are annoying, especially for people who surf the net during work time.

Run split testing if you want to tweak your website design. It’s a great way to test new ideas with users.
