Teddy Bears In Space!

December 5, 2008

UK (ChattahBox) – When you think of some of the most fascinating and ground breaking space explorations, you don’t generally put Britain on that list. But after today, we may have to. In an interesting new project, the British have launched four teddy bears strapped to cameras and other equipment into orbit around the Earth, making them the first toys in space.

Dressed in ‘space suits’ designed and made by local students, the bears were sent on their mission with the use of a large helium balloon. They made it to an altitude of 100,000 feet before the balloon burst and the bears’ parachutes activated, sending them safely back to Earth, where they landed in Ipswich, England. It was an exciting triumph after several unsuccessful attempts, and the 2 hour flight will go down in history as the first account of fluff filled friends in the stratosphere.

β€œIt was unbelievable to see the balloon take off and it’s incredible to see the pictures of the teddy bears in space,” said Thia Unsworth, one of the students who helped create the special space suits that kept the toys from freezing in the -53 C. temperature. ‘I’ve always loved science before, but I now understand how it helps in the real world.’
