14 Year Old Girl Named ‘Strongest In Britain’

January 6, 2009

UK (ChattahBox) – A 14-year-old girl has been named the ‘Strongest Girl In Britain’ after winning the gold in India’s Common Wealth Youth Games, setting a record for her age group in weightlifting.

Zoe Smith astounded judges when she managed to lift twice her 98 lb body weight, setting a world record and placing her on the Olympic hopefuls list, an accomplishment even the young Zoe had been shocked and thrilled by.

“Seeing my name on a list as an equal alongside all the big names from last year’s Olympics was unbelievable,” she told reporters. “At first I thought there might have been some mistake and was a bit nervous about telling anyone, so I was amazingly happy when it sunk in that it was true.”

She began weightlifting at age 12, after leaving gymnastics to pursue it more, and now trains eight hours a week in order to reach her ultimate goal: the 2012 Olympics.

“Just being selected would be a dream come true and of course the ultimate aim for anyone would be to win the gold medal, me included.”
