Sick Sea Turtle Swims to Animal Hospital for Help

April 1, 2009

(ChattahBox)– An unusual story out of Miami, Florida this week. A loggerhead sea turtle weighing 73-pounds swam right up to the dock of an animal hospital in the Florida Keys. The poor guy was told to take a number and wait his turn apparently, because he hung around for several hours until the veterinarians decided to check him out and discovered he was sick from a bacterial infection.

The kicker of this story is that the animal hospital named, the Florida Keys Turtle Hospital is dedicated solely to treating sea turtles. Now that’s one smart turtle!

The sick sea turtle was treated with some medications and given a blue tank “hospital room” until he recovers.

Loggerhead sea turtles are a common species of nesting turtles that can grow as large as 800 lbs. The little guy who showed up at the turtle hospital must have been a teenager.

South Florida has the largest population of loggerheads, where the females lay their eggs in the soft sandy beaches. The turtles and their eggs are a protected species.
