Healthy Baby Girl Born, Using 22-year-Old Frozen Sperm of Cancer Survivor

April 14, 2009

(ChattahBox)—A North Carolina couple is welcoming a new addition to their family, with the birth of a healthy 7lb-7oz-baby girl, named Stella, born on February 25 at Presbyterian Hospital. Her birth was not the ordinary miracle of life variety, but was made possible by using the father’s stored sperm, frozen 22-years ago, when he was just 16, before he underwent radiation treatment for leukemia that made him sterile.

Chris and Melodie Biblis are ecstatic that the procedure worked without a hitch. Doctors say the use of 22-year old frozen sperm sets a new world record.

When Chris Biblis was a 16-year old high school student, he was fighting for his life, first diagnosed with cancer when he was just 13. The last thing on his mind was storing his sperm for a future family. But his mother knew differently, and she persuaded his doctors to store samples of the teen’s sperm in liquid nitrogen.

Chris Biblis is now 39 and has been cancer free for 20 years. When he and his wife, Melodie, 33, decided they wanted children, they had the stored sperm defrosted. Using the new ICSI-IVF combination procedure, 15 eggs were removed from Melodie’s ovaries and fertilized with Chris’s sperm, resulting in seven viable embryos.

Two embryos were implanted in Melodie, resulting in the birth of Stella. The couple now has five more embryos stored away for future pregnancies.

Richard Wing, a fertility specialist of Reproductive Endocrinology Associates of Charlotte who conducted the procedure, says he had no concerns using older frozen sperm.

Doctors say, it was unusual to freeze sperm 22 years ago and that the ICSI injection procedure was not even developed until 1992, which allowed the lab fertilization of Melodie’s eggs with Chris’s sperm.

Chris and Melodie have grandmother Biblis to thank for their miracle baby, Stella. Chris’s mother had the foresight and faith 22 years ago that her son would survive his battle with cancer, and today she can celebrate life with her new granddaughter.
