Emergency small plane landing caught on video

April 22, 2009

WINTER HAVEN, FL (ChattahBox) — A flight instructor, Kyle Davis and his passenger Joe Surowiec, were planning a 15-minute flight, but it got cut even shorter when the engines conked out two-minutes in. Surowiec a professional videographer mounted a camera in the cockpit and on the wing of the dual-seat SkyRanger airplane (video below). They had no idea that they would end up having engine troubles and have to make an emergency landing.

“Airplanes, even when engines quit, they don’t fall out of the sky. They glide very nicely so you gotta fly the airplane. Once I flew the airplane, I was picking a spot,” Davis explained.

In the video, you can see the two men discussing their options of where to land the plane. There was a lake nearby and a street. Davis chose the street.

“I say God must have been watching out for me in the most literal sense because Sunday morning ten o clock a lot of people were in church, the roads weren’t busy and that was my biggest obstacle that I feel I had to overcome was cars on the road,” he said.

Even though Davis may have nerves of steel, a number of words on the video are bleeped out.

“I was saying my prayers,” Davis said. “I was saying my prayers.”

He landed the plane safely on the road and then pulled up to a store front.

Probably pulled up to the store front to buy a fifth of whiskey. Does Florida have blue laws?

It looks ‘staged’ to me. The dialog says engines but the video shows a prop in front of the pilot on the nose of the plane. Was it a push/pull? Also why would there be a camera mounted on the wing focused on the nose engine? Then the engine seems to start up a couple times with no comment from the pilot like ‘what the?’. And lastly why was there absolutely no cars parked or traffic on the street?
