War Of The Machines: Robot Attacks And Nearly Kills Man

April 29, 2009

Sweden (ChattahBox) – In a story straight out of the movies, a Swedish company is being fined for endangering a worker, after a robot malfunctioned and attacked the man, nearly killing him.

The man had been working on the robot, which had been showing signs of malfunctioning wiring, when the attack occurred. After cutting off the power supply (or believing that he had), the machine suddenly sparked back to life. It grabbed a hold of the man’s head and attempted to crush it.

“The man was very lucky. He broke four ribs and came close to losing his life,” Prosecutor Leif Johansson explained on the incident.

The man is recovering, and the factory will be forced to pay a fine.

Sounds like their lockout/tagout system needs an overhaul. The robot no more “attacked” the man than a bulldozer attacks; whatever it does, it is directed to do by humans, either in real time like the bulldozer, or in programming like the robot.

If the power were shut down properly, as is required (even in Sweden) by industrial safety regulations, the situation which is described COULD NOT happen.
