Power Tool used to Comply with Fire Safety Regulations May Have Sparked Santa Barbara Wildfire

May 11, 2009

(ChattahBox) — In an ironic twist, the California wildfire that destroyed 77 homes and forced the evacuation of approximately 30,000 people may have been started by power tools used to clear brush in order to comply with fire safety regulations. Fire Investigators have potentially tracked the blaze to a clearing of vegetation on what appeared to be private land near the trail around the time the fire erupted Tuesday.  Also ironically the power tool clearing may have been prompted by a recently sent annual notice advising residents they had until June 1 to clear potentially hazardous brush.  On the flip side of the coin fire officials over the weekend praised residents’ who had removed brush and fire-prone plants from their properties as it bolstered the defensible space needed to protect homes from the wildfire and kept firefighters safe while working in the region.
