Man Hides From Police In Caves, Not Found For 16 years

July 30, 2009

Portugal (ChattahBox) – A man who had been hiding for 16 years in mountain caves after escaping a murder sentence has been arrested once again after shoving a woman to the ground, where she hit her head and died.

Manuel Cruz had been serving a ten year sentence for murder when he escaped during a prison outing to a nearby village. He fled into the mountains, and lived in the surrounding caves for more than 15 years.

According to police, he lived off of food from local villagers, and kept a guard dog with him in his cave.

“He was a quiet person, he wouldn’t hurt anyone. People liked him. He told people he was afraid of prison and wouldn’t go back there,” Manuel Ramalho Cruz (no relation), who lead the local parish council, was quoted by Salon.

He was captured by police when he got into a heated argument with a local woman over a goat, and pushed her down. The woman hit her head on the ground, and later passed away due to her injuries.

Cruz has been arrested and taken to a prison in another town, where he will serve the last 7 years of his original sentence. No plans for increasing the sentence has been announced.
