Intoxicated Chessmaster Checkmated While Passed Out

September 5, 2009

(ChattahBox)—A Russian born chessmaster, Grandmaster Vladislav Tkachiev is known for his love of chess, vodka and woman and at an international tournament in India this week, Tkachiev arrived for his match so plastered that he kept falling off his chair, and he eventually fell sound asleep losing the match to a checkmate as he snored.

Grandmaster Vladislav Tkachiev, 35, was was born in Moscow, raised in Kazakhstan and now plays chess on the International circuit for France. He is officially ranked 58th in the world and along with his chess-playing brother Evegeny, is known as a colorful hard-drinking chess player with a taste for partying.

When Tkachiev arrived for his match with India’s Praveen Kumar, he could hardly stand up and kept falling off his chair and dozing off. Other players shook his shoulders and offered him water to no avail. Tkachiev went to the men’s room to refresh himself, but when he returned he finally passed out cold, laying his head on the chessboard.

As time ran out for Tkachiev to make his next move, his Indian opponent won on technical grounds. The passed out Tkachiev was then carried out from the chess site.

Perhaps poor Tkachiev just got tired of waiting in between rounds during the slow moving game and started drinking to pass the time. Tkachiev has often complained that the game of chess is too slow, which allows a full one hour and 30 minutes for each move.

Tkachiev and his brother Evegeny, known as the “the Blitz Brothers” embraced the speedy maverick game of “blitz chess,” which they prefer to traditional chess. Tkachiev once said of blitz chess, “During the game light seems brighter, and beer sweeter.”

Tkachiev and Evegeny also raised eyebrows in traditional chess circles when they formed a contest to find the sexiest female chess player. The winner of the sexiest “chess chicks” contest was Hungarian player Tamara Bolvary, with fellow Hungarian player, Tamara Bolvary taking the second spot.

After the intoxicated Tkachiev woke, he was issued an official warning and reprimand by competition officials and he was alowed to continue to play during the rest of the competition.
