Ammo Shortages As People Stockpile Weapons Amidst Gun Legislation Fears

September 24, 2009

US (ChattahBox) – Stores and manufacturers everywhere are seeing a serious shortage in ammunition as gun nuts move to stock up amidst fears of President Obama passing anti-gun legislation.

“We are working overtime and still can’t keep up with the demand,” said Al Russo, spokesman for North Carolina-based Remington Arms Company, was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

“We’ve had to add a fourth shift and go 24-7. It’s a phenomenon that I have not seen before in my 30 years in the business.”

The usual amount of rounds bought by Americans is reportedly 7 billion, a number that has increase by a further two billion in the last year.

The majority of sales have been to handguns, and given the fact that gun sales themselves have risen drastically in certain states it isn’t surprising that ammo has followed.

Believe it or not, even though I am a Liberal I am not dedicated to the eradication of gun ownership. While I would prefer not to have one in my home, and I think the constitutional amendment that allows a civilian to bear arms is a little outdated, I don’t actually have a problem with gun ownership.

But I can’t help but note that this all seems a little ridiculous, mainly because it looks like a self-fulfilling prophesy. All of these gun owners who are positive that Obama will ban gun ownership are rushing out to buy more guns. Those owners will be creating their own little armaments (some of them, anyway), which is bound to make the government nervous.

Does it seem likely that the purchase of so many guns and ammo might actually push the current administration to start restricting gun laws? After all, there are bound to be a number of extremists who are dominating the sales, even if not everyone who is stocking up would fall into that category.

It all seems a little counterproductive to me, and I would venture a bet that it will be this sudden stockpiling that will lead to an emergency regulation being put in place against guns and ammo.

But at least it is stimulating the economy, right?

What’s wrong with bare arms? Sure, you’re subject to sunburn, but that’s any citizen’s choice, right?

As for “emergency regulation” – I’ll bet against it. In fact, I’ll be US$100 that you will not see “emergency regulation” being seriously proposed during the Obama Administration, and here’s why: Any such proposal at the Federal level would firstly generate outrage among anyone who has read the Second Amendment and understood the reason for it (e.g., tyrants are automatically limited in the tyranny they can get away with when the citizens are armed), and secondly generate a surge of right-wing votes *against* anyone supporting such legislation, even if it gets through Congress and gets signed into law, and finally, it would have to pass must in the Supreme Court, which is currently and for the foreseeable future still dominated by Right Wingers who will declare any such law unconstitutional. Oh, and then of course, it’s unenforceable without other changes that would permit the US military to operate against otherwise-peaceful citizens who didn’t choose to give up their guns.

Personally, I don’t own any guns, but if such legislation *were* to be seriously presented to Congress, I’d get a 12-gauge, a .45 auto pistol, and a semi-automatic rifle immediately.

Where did you get the picture in the article? It looks like weapons confiscated in Iraq. These are certainly not the type of firerarms the average citizen has, or can even own. Non Sequiter.

Some people just don’t like being put in ovens or gas chambers in the name of mean progress. Just because you replace the word Jews with Greedy/rich/wealthy/lucky/fortunate doesn’t mean we don’t see whats coming. 😉
