Woman Finds Out She Is Pregnant With Two Babies, But They Aren’t Twins

September 25, 2009

Arkansas (ChattahBox) – A woman who initially showed one fetus growing during an ultrasound later discovered a second, which appeared to have begun developing two weeks after his sister.

The first fetus, a female, was the only one that doctors were able to see during all initial ultrasounds, and there was originally only one heartbeat. A second was discovered later, and the male appears to have begun developing a few weeks later.

The phenomenon is being attributed a rare case of superfetation, a condition that has only been recorded ten times, where a woman becomes pregnant while pregnant.

“This is an unusual and rare condition, but the possibility is real. It can only be confirmed after delivery by chromosomal and metabolic studies on the babies,”Dr. Karen Boyle was quoted in her interview with Good Morning America.

Because of the small distance between conception, doctors are relatively certain that both babies should be born healthy around the same time.
