David Cook ended up winning American Idol on Wednesday night, beating out David Archuleta by 12 million votes in what was the most votes cast ever in an American Idol competition, breaking a world-record.

American Idol, for the fourth straight season, is the No. 1 show among adult viewers aged 18 to 49 according to Nielsen Media Research.

The show had some low ratings throughout the season, but that was all made up for in the end.

It was the third-most-watched American Idol finale behind the 2006 finale between Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee, as well as the 2003 finale between Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken.

Studdard and Aiken stand as the most-watched with 38.1 million viewers.

The 31.7 million for this year did beat out last year’s finale between Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis.
