The classic children's cartoon The Smurfs are headed to the big screen to mark their 50th anniversary.Boston (ChattahBox) – The classic children’s cartoon The Smurfs are headed to the big screen to mark their 50th anniversary.

Columbia and Sony have united and purchased the film rights to the original 1958 comic book series, which later turned into a TV series.

The title of the film is not yet known, but it has been confirmed that The Smurfs movie will be a mix of animation and live-action.

Columbia president Doug Belgrad stated “We’re very excited to introduce a new generation to Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs in all of their glory.

The film will be written by David Stem and David Weiss, best known for the last two Shrek movies.
