Monet Painting Breaks Auction Record, Sells For $80.4 Million

A water landscape painted by Claude Monet back in 1919 called Hollywood (ChattahBox) – A water landscape painted by Claude Monet back in 1919 called “Le Bassin Aux Nympheas has smashed the auction record, selling for $80.4 million in London.

This price was the highest ever paid for a Monet painting in an auction.

The painting was expected to be sold for $47.2 million, but managed to get much higher than that.

The price came in at $71.8 million, and then with taxes and the commission which needed to be paid to Christie, it went up to $80.4 million.

The winner who put in the historic bid did not have his or her identity revealed.

The previous record holder was Monet’s painting from 1873 called “Le Pont du chemin de fer a Argenteuill,” which sold for $41.1 million.
