Walt Disney Studios celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of the all time classics, Sleeping Beauty with a new Platinum Edition DVD which as always is only available for a limited time.  This newly restored two disc set contains a digitally enhanced version of the film as well as a ton of great bonus features for both the kids and adults alike.

For those unfamiliar with the story, it opens with the birth of a princess who finds herself cursed by the evil witches spell.  This spell cast over the princess is one which will have the princess put into a coma like state after pricking her finger on a spindle as the sun sets on her 16th birthday.  In an effort to protect his daughter the king orders all spindles destroyed.  Unfortunately this is not enough so Princess Aurora is taken deep into the woods to hide her from the evil witch and raised by her three guardian fairies.  All the efforts put forth by the fairies and King and Queen prove fruitless since on her 16th birthday the princess finds the lone spindle in the land and pricks her finger.  Now only true love’s kiss will wake her.  Enter Prince Charming, and they all lived happily ever after.

The quality of the film is beautifully enhanced even on DVD.  While you can still tell it is not the animation of today, the colors are definitely brighter and more lively.  The audio tracks received the biggest enhancement coming to a DVD format.  The old VHS version of these films fail to capture the sound and song contained in these great Disney films.

The bonus features contained in this two disc set contain a never before seen behind the scenes making of featurette which shows the work that was required in order to get an animated feature made 50 years ago.  This compared to how technology has improved this process and eliminated the number of hours needed to bring a feature to life is amazing.  Also along with the Alternate opening and Deleted Scenes/ Songs are a number of great features for the little ones.  A number of kids DVDs do try to contain a number of interactive features and this one delivers.  The interactive castle walkthrough is fantastic as is the Dance Game which will have the kiddies (and maybe even some adults) singing and dancing for hours!
