Blu-Ray Review

Street Date: October 14th 2008

This original and sequel hits starring Michael Douglas & Kathleen Turner receive the full treatment of HD remastering on Blu-Ray this October. The films originally released in 1984 & 1985 are an exciting and romantic adventure straight out of a trashy romance novel.

Romancing the Stone (1984) introduces Joan Wilder (Turner) as a famous romance novelist who suddenly finds herself in the midst of a real life adventure as she attempts to rescue her sister Elaine who was kidnapped in South America. The kidnappers wish to exchange Elaine for a treasure map Joan received from her brother in law who had been murdered. Not being the outdoorsy type Joan quickly finds herself in over her head and lost in the jungles. She is forced to team up with Jack Colton (Douglas) who helps Joan realize there is more to life and love than she can find in a book.

The Jewel of the Nile picks up after Romancing the Stone where Jack and Joan are living together and having a good life together. Unfortunately for both things are getting a bit boring, and Joan accepts an invitation to be the guest of the sheik in a North African jungle. Once again finding herself in over her head Jack and his new partner Ralph (Danny DeVito) are on the run to find and save Joan from certain death. Along the way they find the mysterious jewel of the Nile.

These films are not meant to be taken too seriously. I find these films to be a fun adventurous romp, which satisfies my need for action, and adventure while my wife can enjoy the romance angle. The restored quality is top notch as usual, the 1080P delivered on both in the new Blu-Ray format and DTS HD 5.1 sound is fantastic.

The Bonus Features on these discs are a bit lean other than the original trailers and some retrospectives from the cast and crew. The featurettes that are included are worthy of a look see but nothing extraordinary.

Film: 6.5

Audio: 8.5

Video: 8.5

Bonus Material: 7.0

Overall: 7.8
