Henry Winkler and Steve Guttenburg kick off the start of pantomime season

November 20, 2008

London (ChattahBox) — Henry Winkler, better known by many as The Fonz from Seventies hit comedy Happy Days, was joined by fellow Hollywood star Steve Guttenberg at a shopping center in North London today to launch this year’s pantomime season.

Henry is playing Captain Hook in Peter Pan alongside former Strictly contestant and Bill and EastEnders star Louisa Lytton.

Police Academy and Three Men And A Baby star Steve Guttenberg meanwhile is starring in Cinderella at the Ambassadors Theatre in Bromley alongside comedienne Helen Lederer.

Guttenberg revealed it was  Henry Winkler who persuaded him to do panto. The recent Dancing with the Stars contestant is appearing in Cinderella in Bromley after Henry in his third year running in panto – told him what a great job it was.

Steve, who’ll play Baron Hardup, said: “It was Henry Winkler who did the panto last year and suggested I come on down and I just think it’s one of the best experiences. Henry was so right, it’s really wonderful.”

Helen Lederer who is playing the Fairy Godmother opposite Steve revealed: “I don’t think he knew too much about panto. It’s a bit of a rude awakening. I think we’re just going with the flow and bonding. I think it will be great fun. But I might have to teach him a few things.”

Henry – who joked that seeing his production of Peter Pan “can cure the common cold” – confessed he had to learn about panto rituals when he started.
He said: “I knew nothing about it, there’s nothing like the panto in the whole of America and we are lacking, we miss this. This is just brilliant- the fact that the whole family comes. It’s a religious experience, particularly our panto.”

Pantomime is a British tradition that goes back at least 100 years. Pantomimes take place at Christmas and nearly always have stories based around well known children’s stories such as Peter Pan, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty etc. They are very audience interactive, with booing for the villian, and lot’s of exchanges between characters and the audience.
