Country Singer Mindy McCready in Hospital Following Latest Suicide Attempt

December 17, 2008

(ChattahBox) — Mindy McCready’s bad year just took another tragic turn as the country singer was hospitalized this morning for an apparent attempted suicide.

The New York Daily News reports that McCready, who carried on a decade-long affair with pitcher Roger Clemens that came to light in April, was taken to a Nashville-area hospital for a severed a tendon in her left arm which required immediate surgery. Nashville Police Department spokeswoman Kris Mumford told the Daily News:

“We responded to a ’10-63,’ that’s a suicidal person call. Mindy McCready was at the house. Apparently she called the mother of her roommate and said some things that caused the mother concern. She called authorities. We responded with paramedics, who took her to a local hospital.”

Police believe McCready was intoxicated when authorities arrived at the home. This is not the first time McCready has tried to take her life. She was hospitalized in 2005 after swallowing a near-fatal dose of pills, chased with wine.

The 33-year-old McCready has been weathering enormous pressure all year. In July she overdosed on drugs and alcohol, which sent her to the emergency room at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She later checked into a Texas rehab facility following the nervous breakdown.

In October McCready spent 31 days (of a 60-day sentence) in jail for violating the terms of her probation from a 2004 guilty plea for fraudulently obtaining prescription painkillers.
