Sam Shepard arrested on DUI charge

January 4, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Actor and playwright Sam Shepard has been arrested on preliminary charges of speeding and drunken driving.

The 65-year-old Shepard was driving 16 mph over the 30 mph speed limit when he was pulled over early Saturday in the central Illinois town of Normal.

Police administered a breath test indicated Shepard’s blood-alcohol level was double the legal limit.

“The way he pulled up on the curb, it appeared he was driving under the influence,” a police spokesman said.

Shepard told police he had been at a tavern in nearby Bloomington and was heading to a hotel. He said he was on his way to his home in Kentucky from Minnesota.

He was arrested on preliminary charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding 15-20 mph above the limit and improper lane usage. His blood-alcohol level was reportedly twice the 0.08 legal limit for driving.

Shepard won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for drama for his play “Buried Child,” and also has acted in dozens of films, including “Black Hawk Down,” “The Notebook” and “The Right Stuff.”

Shepard lives with longtime partner and actress Jessica Lange. They have two children.
