(ChattahBox) — 25-year-old Australian TV star Chris Hemsworth has just been cast by Marvel Studios and director Kenneth Branagh in the lead role as the Mighty Thor due out in theaters on May 20, 2011.  Hemsworth is a bit of a departure from the big, familiar names Marvel has been using to populate its superhero films and according to Deadline Hollywood’s Nikki Finke, Daniel Craig reportedly turned down the lead role.

While Hemsworth is a virtual unknown here in the United States, all that is about to change very soon. Now named as Marvel’s Thor, Hemsworth who portrayed James T. Kirk’s father, George Samuel Kirk Sr., in the 2009 Star Trek reboot, will also pretty much be guaranteed and appearance in the forthcoming Summer 2012 Avengers ensemble super hero movie with Iron Man, Captain America …

Hemsworth is a hot Hollywood property now, recently being signed for A Perfect Getaway, starring alongside Eric Bana he and also just snapped up the lead in Red Dawn for United Artists on Thursday. Right now he’s busy filming Joss Whedon’s horror flick Cabin In The Woods for UA.
