Lars von Trier Booed At Cannes For ‘Antichrist’

May 18, 2009

France (ChattahBox) – Lars von Trier is well known for creating disturbing, violent films and then showing nothing but disdain for the audiences, whether they liked it or not. But his new film ‘Antichrist’ has many who once defended him saying he took things too far.

The film is about a couple (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe) who retreat to an isolated cabin in the woods to recover after the horrible death of their young son. While there, things begin to slowly go out of control, leading to a horrifying mix of gory, tension building scenes, some of which caused the seasoned crowd at Cannes to react in anger.

Boos were even heard during one memorable scene involving genital mutilation, one of two that occurred, in fact.

When asked what he had in mind when he made the film, von Trier replied “I never have a choice. It’s the hand of God, I’m afraid, and I am the best director in the world.”

He also said that this movie was his attempt at ‘therapy’ after suffering a severe depression.

Whatever reason he had for making it, it is clear to cause wide controversy, and has already split the film world in two, with those who thought it was a harrowing look into the evils of the human psyche that can develop after a tragedy, and a larger majority that seemed to see it as a bit of violent pornography wrapped in self-indulgence.

As for von Trier, he doesn’t seem to care either way.

“I work for myself and I do this little film that I am now kind of fond of,” he said

“I haven’t done it for you or an audience, so I don’t think I owe anybody an explanation.”
