ESPN Bans New York Post for Andrews’ Nude Photos

July 22, 2009

(ChattahBox)—ESPN is protecting its own, by taking swift action against the New York Post for publishing nude still images from a peephole video made of Erin Andrews while she was undressing in a hotel room.

Blasting the New York Post for violating basic standards of decency, ESPN announced on Wednesday that it’s banning Post reporters from all of its media outlets, including TV and radio.

Chris LaPlaca, ESPN’s senior VP of communications announced, “In light of the New York Post’s decision to run graphic photos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, we have decided to stop utilizing Post reporters on any of our outlets.”

The Post published still images from the surreptitiously obtained video of Andrews in the nude, in its print editions and on its website.

“Erin was grievously wronged here, and while we understand the Post’s decision to cover this as a news story, their running photos obtained in such a fashion went well beyond the boundaries of common decency in the interest of sensationalism. This is not a decision we undertook lightly, but we feel it is an appropriate one,” said LaPlaca.

LaPlaca made clear that ESPN’s actions against the Post were not directed towards individual employees, whom he referred to as “innocent bystanders.”

CBS and Fox also used snippets of the video on Tuesday, which action LaPlaca derided as “beyond the pale.”

It’s not yet known who shot the video of Andrews or where, but her attorney pledged to sue any media outlet that publishes the video.

The New York Daily News reported on Wednesday that a source informed Radaronline.com that a co-worker may have shot the naked video footage of Andrew without her knowledge.
