New Dune Film in the Works: Fun “Epic Adventure”

August 7, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Frank Herbert’s novel Dune is perhaps one of the best science fiction novels ever written and has won over legions of devoted fans, since it was first published over forty years ago in 1965. And now director Peter Berg is embarking on another attempt at bringing the complex tale to the big screen.

Director David Lynch adapted Dune to the big screen first in 1984, and although quite an extraordinary film to watch, the story line fell emotionally flat. The movie was very dark, but it was a David Lynch film, so that’s to be expected.

The Syfy channel produced a miniseries in 2000 that was critically received, but again, that feeling the reader experiences from the novel of being transported into a different world and time, was still missing from the miniseries.

Director Peter Berg thinks he can improve on prior movie adaptations, by producing the story as a swashbuckling epic adventure. The book “…was much more muscular and adventurous, more violent and possibly even a little bit more fun,” Berg said. He envisions a “more dynamic film” that won’t offend “…die-hard fans of the Bene Gesserit and Kwisatz Haderach.”

A script for the new Dune movie has not been set down to paper yet, but Berg is excited about the upcoming project and so are Dune fans everywhere.
