Don Imus close to new Fox Business deal

August 10, 2009

(ChattahBox) — Two years after a verbal faux pas about an all-black female basketball team got him trussed up and lynched by many, Don Imus is now in talks with Fox Business to achieve resurrection.

The LA Times reports that the popular radio host is in final talks with the Fox Business network to simulcast his New York-based WABC radio show, just as MSNBC did before his comments about the basketball players got that show deleted in 2007. Nothing is final as yet, but should discussions close as insiders expect, Imus would return to the airwaves sometime in September.

A spokesman for the troubled radio host declined any comment, but Fox has been more forthcoming, “We talk to interesting and engaging talent all the time,” said Irena Briganti, a spokeswoman for Fox Business.

Any such move for Imus, now 69, would mark a welcome step-up: Since his comments about the basketball team got his CBS booking canceled, ‘Imus in the Morning’ has been exiled to WABC, and RFD-TV – a small-time cable network that reports on rural America and big farming news. That deal would be ended by a new show with Fox.

But the increase in profile may be less than Don thinks; Since its debut in October 2007, the fiscal fledgling – now visible in more than 50-million homes – has garnered a meager 6,300 viewers a day, and consistently lost in the ratings to CNBC; Lately by more than 10 to 1. Their average audiences are so woefully small, Neilsen Media just refuses to count them.

With such poor performance, the two sides are clearly in need of each other to forestall extinction. And the path is now clear – After invoking a dust storm with the basketball comments, Imus apologized to the press, and most his stalwarts had soon returned. And this colorful coterie of politicos and writers are just what Fox needs to make more people watch.

The former CBS host has since secured a termination settlement with his aggrieved ex-employers, and despite being diagnosed with prostate cancer in March he is thought to be keen to assume the new challenge. A formal announcement is expected quite soon.
