Glenn Beck: Are Your Fans Morons? Not Accusing, Just Asking

October 8, 2009

(ChattahBox)—“We’re not saying he’s not patriotic, but why would a patriotic American seek relief outside the U.S.?” Just saying. So says the owner of the Glenn Beck parody website, Did Glenn Beck Rape and Murder a Young Girl in 1990. The website, clearly marked as “100% parody,” seeks to provide the controversial Fox News pundit known for his circular logic, with a well deserved satirical slap in the face.

But Glenn Beck believes the website goes too far. And instead of filing a civil lawsuit for libel against the site owner, Beck hypocritically filed a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization, asking that the domain name be taken away.

Beck has often railed against International law, as somehow endangering our constitution. So, it’s ironic that he seeks relief from an international Internet governing body. And the reason he is doing so, is that he is unlikely to win a civil lawsuit for libel in the U.S. As a public figure, parody and satire are clearly protected forms of speech under the First Amendment.

Beck’s quotes on the evils of international law:

“Once we sign our rights over to international law, the Constitution is officially dead. When you say things like, ‘We are not going to put the Constitution behind international law,’ you say that in the international court, if you say that on the floor of the United Nations, you are a freak show.”

And in a, no truer words have been said under the circumstances category:

“Let me tell you something. When you can’t win with the people, you bump it up to the courts. When you can’t win with the courts, you bump it up to the international level.”

The Did Glenn Beck Rape and Murder a Young Girl in 1990 website, hits Beck with a taste of his own rhetorical style, forcing people to prove a negative, as he nightly hurls out vague accusations in an attempt to smear the reputations of good people. Beck’s accusations are about as subtle as the old standby: “When did you stop beating your wife?”

Beck’s favorite gambit is to make accusatory statements in the form of an interrogative. As noted by Ed Brayton from his blog, Dispatches From the Culture Wars, Beck’s attacks take the shape of the following Idiocy:

“Hey, I’m just asking questions here. I’m not saying he did this. What’s wrong with asking questions?”

A famous example of Beck’s smear tactics took place during an interview with Muslim lawmaker Keith Ellison (DFL-MN):

“No offense and I know Muslims, I like Muslims, I’ve been to mosques, I really don’t think Islam is a religion of evil. I think it’s being hijacked, quite frankly. With that being said, you are a Democrat. You are saying let’s cut and run. And I have to tell you, I have been nervous about this interview because what I feel like saying is, sir, prove to me that you are not working with our enemies. And I know you’re not. I’m not accusing you of being an enemy. But that’s the way I feel, and I think a lot of Americans will feel that way.”

The owner of the parody site clearly invokes Beck’s outrageous interview of Rep. Ellison. And seeks to draw attention to the danger of irresponsible journalism and the type of smear tactics and claims of guilt by association used by Beck:

“Notice: This site is parody/satire. We assume Glenn Beck did not rape and murder a young girl in 1990, although we haven’t yet seen proof that he didn’t. But we think Glenn Beck definitely uses tactics like this to spread lies and misinformation.

Read the last sentence again. That’s the point. Read it a third time and ignore the name of the site itself, because anyone who believes that we’re trying to actually get people to believe Glenn Beck raped and/or murdered is *whoosh* missing the entire point. So don’t be dumb like a lot of people are. I greatly expanded this text because so many people *read* it, and *still* didn’t understand.”

The inspiration for the website, Did Glenn Beck Rape and Murder a Young Girl in 1990, actually came from an hilarious Gilbert Gottfried Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget.

The attorney for the site owner, Marc Randazza, does not seem too concerned that Beck will prevail in taking the parody site down. In fact, his legal response to Beck’s complain is itself, an hilarious spoof:

“We are not here because the domain name could cause confusion. We do not have a declaration from the president of the international association of imbeciles that his members are blankly staring at the Respondent’s website wondering “where did all the race baiting content go?” We are here because Mr. Beck wants Respondent’s website shut down. He wants it shut down because Respondent’s website makes a poignant and accurate satirical critique of Mr. Beck by parodying Beck’s very rhetorical style. Beck’s skin is too thin to take the criticism, so he wants the site down,” wrote Randazza.

However, Mr. Beck’s lawyers are no fools. They are well aware that the First Amendment will give full protection to the Respondent’s website. Therefore, we find ourselves mired in a bogus “defamation” claim under the guise of this UDRP complaint. But, this is not the forum to raise such a claim. If the “defamation” alluded to in the Complaint were truly believed to have legal validity, this case would have been brought in a U.S. court.

And in conclusion, Randazza Writes:

“It is specious at best for Mr. Beck to assert that his fans, or the public as a whole, would confuse Respondent’s website with Mr. Beck himself—unless of course it is Mr. Beck’s view that his fans and the average Internet user are in fact hurried morons. Respondent presumes that this is not how Mr.Beck regards his audience. And, even if he does so regard his audience, this is not a basis for upholding his complaint.”

Glenn Beck, prove to me that your fans are not morons. I know they’re not. I’m not accusing your fans of being morons, but that’s the way I feel. Just saying.

    Jim P-
I think you are missing the point here. I don’t think that anyone believes that rape and murder are funny subjects. In fact, it is the heinous nature of those crimes which makes this effective. Satire must be brutal to make its point. I seriously doubt that Jonathan Swift thought that infanticide and cannibalism were humorous subjects when he wrote “A Modest Proposal.’
