Racism? Couples Retreat ‘Simplify’ UK Movie Poster by Erasing Black Actors

November 17, 2009

(ChattahBox)—Britain is accusing Hollywood of blatant racism. Universal Pictures is riding high on its popular movie, Couples Retreat, released last month starring Vince Vaughn and Kristin Davis. But the movie studio apparently doesn’t think the black actors in the movie, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk are suitable for British audiences, because they were erased from the UK movie poster.

British residents are crying foul over the removal of the black actors from their movie poster, with the Mail newspaper calling the situation a “race row.” The American poster for the film includes the black actors.

Universal Pictures explained the erasure of the black actors as a harmless decision to “simplify” the poster for the UK market. The film maker’s intention was “to simplify the poster to actors who are most recognizable in international markets,” said the spokesperson.

The maker of Couples Retreat has now decided to use the American poster showing all eight actors, as the movie is released in other countries. Good move.
