Walters Taps Michelle Obama Most Fascinating Person

December 10, 2009

(ChattahBox)—First Lady Michelle Obama was chosen as Barbara Walters’ most fascinating Person of 2009. “First lady Michelle Obama is shaping up to be more than the sum of her parts,” said Walters. Michelle Obama beat out Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Lady Gaga and Kate Gosselin, among others. In an interview that aired Wednesday night, Obama said her favorite quiet time activity is cuddling on the couch in the first family’s quarters and watching TV. No, not with Barack. She cuddles with Bo the First Dog.

Some of the headlines this morning are suggesting some sort of slight towards Sarah Palin, because she wasn’t chosen. Perhaps the half-term governor and celebrity signer of a ghost written book can earn the coveted honor next year.

Meanwhile, Barbara Walters’ interview of Mrs. Obama covered predictable topics, such as her toned arms and her garden. She spoke about the challenges of moving her two girls into the White House.

“I mean, if you think about this year, I had to get these two beautiful girls settled into a new city, into a new home, into a new school. We got a dog. I visited eight countries with my husband. I planted a garden. I’ve started a mentoring program. It has been everything. And now, here we are at our first Christmas in the White House…”

The First Lady spoke of her determination to get a workout in, even when her daughters were still infants:

“[Malia] was still waking up for that four o’clock feeding and I’d get up because I’d be the first one to hear her, and he’d be asleep. And I thought, ‘I’m up, I might as well go to the gym. And if I get to the gym, then he’ll have to wake up and do that feeding. I get a workout in and everyone will be happy. So you know, if there’s anything that I can attribute these arms to, it’s probably just determination….”

And Michelle Obama told Walters she would vote for her her husband for president, even if they weren’t married:

“I always thought, ‘Well, if I wanted somebody as my state senator, or as my U.S. senator, or as my president, I would want Barack Obama.’ And the only reason he wouldn’t do it is if I said no….”

And her favorite time to get away from all the stress is watching junk TV with Bo:

“He thinks he’s a lap dog. He’ll cozy up with me, and I’m just clicking through mindless shows. A lot of, you know, shows about food and design, and all that good stuff. And it’s just quiet, and I’m not thinking about anything for that second — not about the kids, not about my husband, not about my schedule. If I get an hour of that during the course of a week, it feels like heaven.”

Rounding out the top 10 most fascinating people were: Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford, movie mogul Tyler Perry, TV host Glenn Beck, NFL quarterback Brett Favre, Sarah Palin and Michael Jackson’s children Prince, Paris and Blanket.
