Abby Sunderland Safe, But Was Her Father Gunning For Reality Show?

June 15, 2010

(ChattahBox) – There was already a great deal of controversy over the attempted sail around the world by 16-year-old Abby Sunderland, especially once she had to be rescued from the Indian Ocean. But was there more to her father’s decision to let her go?

Ted Caloroso of Magnetic Entertainment accused Lawrence Sunderland of pushing the California teen to go before she was ready, as he shopped around for reality shows about Abby and her brother Zac, who held the record she was attempting to break.

But Sunderland has shot back, making the rather shocking (and probably unfair) accusation that Caloroso had been hoping the teen would die to “make for better television”.

“He wanted to make it about me being an irresponsible parent and Abigail dying,” he said.

But Caloroso isn’t having it.

“I think he’s just trying to save face right now,” the producer said in an interview with NBC.

“The fact that Laurence has gone and talked to news agencies and saying that we hoped for her death and it would be great for the reality show is completely ridiculous. I think Abby was pushed too soon to leave on her voyage.”
