Anti-Aging Series: Neutrogena Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse Cleanser

January 29, 2009

When I think of Neutrogena, an image immediately comes to mind: a teenage girl, attractive, with dirty blond hair tied back into a ponytail, and perfect skin, tells the camera about her breakout right before Senior Prom. Oh no! Whatever will she do? Luckily, Neutrogena is there to save the day with their latest cleanser, moisturizer, or gel, and her invisible pimples are gone.

It may not be fair, but this image is branded into my mind, and so the last thing I think of when someone brings up Neutrogena is a product aimed at anti-aging. But, they do seem to have a branch specializing in that, so when I heard about their Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse Cleanser, I decided I needed to try it out, even if only for curiosities sake.

Let me state for the record that everyone’s face is different, and so of course they will react to a product in different ways. What may be good for one may be disastrous for another, and I am afraid to say I was in the latter category. My experience was not a happy one, and so I never tried it long enough to find out if it had the anti-aging abilities in boasted.

Allow me to elaborate: it did soften my skin, surprisingly, a result I had not been expecting, and left my face feeling fresh, clean, and lovely after using it. Therefore, I was thrilled in the beginning, and as I laid my head on my pillow to go to sleep, my pores still breathing freely after their treatment, I thought maybe I have found a new buddy for my many skin care products that fill my bathroom, and confuse my husband to tears.

However, when I awoke in the morning, it was to a horrific site: I had had some kind of reaction, and a number of pimples had sprouted all over my forehead, chin, and along the cheek bones on either side. I even had a few on my neck where the cleanser had touched the night before. It was a dramatic experience, especially for me, as acne has never been a big problem in my life, even during my teen years.

From there, I experienced further problems, such as a severe drying of the skin, which left the area around my nose flaking, something no amount of moisturizer seemed to fix. Now, all of this went away within a few days, and of course I never touched that bottle again, so it wasn’t a huge tragedy, but it does give those of you with my skin type something to think about.

So, if you have combination skin, leaning towards dry, and a sensitivity to certain products, Neutrogena’s Anti-Oxidant Age Reverse Cleanser is probably not for you. For oily skin, to normal skin, you may have better luck then I did, and I would love to hear about your experiences, hopefully a good one to counter my bad.

All in all, this is a kind of mixed review. It was horrible for me, but it may work wonders for you…the jury is still out, and perhaps hiding from the verdict. Let me know what you think! For under $10, there has to be someone out there willing to give it the old college try, so we can find out if this was a fluke, or if there is something in this product that can potentially damage the skin.

    Also same bad experience!

I just tried this same product with bad results – I am having dryness around the cheeks, redness, and pimples.

I may write to the manufacturer!

    Thank you,

If you have sensitive skin at all, be VERY cautious about using this product. I used this stuff one night and the next day my face felt smooth, clean and a little tighter. Way cool! I used again it the next night and the next day my left cheek started itching really bad, turned bright red and was warm to the touch. When the itch finally stopped my cheek became very dry. It took a week of alternating between Hydrocortisone and moisturizer every couple hours to clear up. I went back to what I normally use for a couple weeks and then, thinking it was just a fluke, tried this stuff again. First day–awesome. Second day–same reaction. I am going to contact the manufacturer to see if I can get my money back because this does not work well for someone with sensitive skin.

I just used the day cream in this product line and my entire face broke out. I don’t have particularly sensitive skin but there is something in this product that did not agree with my skin. I will go back to my old product.
