The dangers of Tenthers

October 29, 2010

(ChattahBox Op/Ed) – If “one is the loneliest number” then ten is the nuttiest and it has plenty of company. Tenthers are folks who believe the federal government does not have the right to do much of what it does. Basically, they take a very narrow view of the tenth amendment to the constitution, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Essentially, anything they don’t like, the tenthers can declare it unconstitutional, with the exception of federal support for the military. What does that mean to you? How do you like Social Security? National Parks? Medicare? Intra-state highway system? Child labor laws? Minimum wage laws? Civil rights laws? Federally funded research? How about ensuring your food and drugs are safe? Or the Department of Education? All of these are targets for the tenthers.

Never mind that the constitution gives congress broad powers for the “common good” and for commerce. Add to that theĀ  Supreme Court has shot down every one of their arguments.

Who are the tenthers? Well most of your right wing Republicorpians are tenthers in one degree or another and virtually all your so called Tea Party candidates are staunch Tenthers. Heck, they even have one on the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas. Here’s an excerpt from an excellant article from, “Justice Clarence Thomas thinks that the minimum wage, child labor laws, and the federal ban on whites-only lunch counters all violate the Constitution.”

Imagine a world if the tenthers had their way. Luckily right now we don’t have to. All we have to do is pick up an American history book to look back at tentherism at it’s worse. The late 1800s to the early 20th century gave us a world in which children were not protected from predatory business, workers worked without safety regulations or fair wages, our food supply was at continual risk from contamination in short business’ did what they wanted and the public paid the price.

Are you ready for a return to 1890? Sure many of your opiates weren’t regulated yet but is it really worth it to slide backwards just to ride the dragon again? As I recall from watching bad kung fu movies, it wasn’t that glamorous and the white girl always ends up strung out and in need of rescue.

So what’s it going to be, are you going to do the right thing and vote next Tuesday for a return to sanity or are you going to let over a hundred years of progress go by the wayside the way children’s black lung did. Yeah, that was dramatic and a little over the top but in some ways it wasn’t. The folks running for the Republicorp party are serious and they will begin to dismantle those safeguards which were hard fought for and that today we take for granted.

Don’t take them for granted. This new crop of extremists from the right are dangerous and will do you and this country harm if voted into power. Get on the phone, send emails, fight them on Facebook. Challenge your friends to vote and challenge them to get their friends to vote. It’s not to late to make a difference.
