How Low Can Mike Huckabee Go?

March 2, 2011

(ChattahBox Political News)—Fear, hate, racism and xenophobia. That’s what Mike Huckabee has to offer America. Huckabee has staked out his spot in the fevered swamps of birtherism, and racist smears of the right-wing that seek to delegitimize President Obama as the “other.” The former governor of Arkansas, current Fox News personality and presidential hopeful, not once, but twice, falsely claimed during a radio interview that President Obama’s world view “is very different than ours” because he grew up “in Kenya.” He didn’t. Huckabee is echoing the same “anti-colonial” smear peddled by Newt Gingrich. President Obama never set foot in Kenya until he was a young man. He was raised in Hawaii by his white grandparents. He never knew his Kenyan father. After receiving a barrage of criticism for his at best, ignorance, and at worst, his sleazy insinuation that Obama is foreign and some sort of anti-Colonial Mau Mau tribesman, Huckabee’s spokesperson said he misspoke. Huckabee’s flack claims he meant to say Obama grew up in Indonesia. But as numerous reporters have pointed out, that makes little sense. But today, Huckabee dropped all pretense, and doubled down on his vicious campaign to portray Obama as a foreign usurper with a secret agenda to destroy America. During an appearance on another radio program, Huckabee again took aim at Obama’s legitimacy by falsely claiming that he grew up surrounded by “madrassas.” Ol’ Huck is obviously pandering to the lowest common denominator of the Republican Party. And it’s vile.

Huckabee made his latest odious remarks during an appearance on Bryan Fischer’s radio program. Fischer, who peddles overheated, insane evangelical rhetoric, is a virulent anti-gay member of the Family Research Council, a group that has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Fischer asked Huckabee to comment on the “fundamental anti-Americanism of this president.” Huck was happy to oblige.

HUCKABEE: And I have said many times, publicly, that I do think he has a different worldview and I think it’s in part molded out of a very different experience. Most of us grew up going to Boy Scout meetings, you know, our communities were filled with Rotary Clubs, not madrassas. And I just do think that there is uh…again I’m not saying he’s not a citizen. I’ve never said that, I’ve said the opposite. I’ve never said he’s a Muslim…

President Obama lived in Indonesia from the age of 6 to 10 with his white mother and Indonesian stepfather. Young Barack Obama attended a Catholic school in Indonesia. From the day he was born, except for a brief period of his early childhood spent in Indonesia, Obama was raised in Hawaii. He was never surrounded by madrassas, as Huckabee claims. And Hawaii, just like Arkansas, has Boy Scout troops and Rotary Clubs.

Huckabee has shown himself to be no different than the stark raving mad, racist birthers. If Huck does decide to run for president, we can expect more of this despicable trash from him.
