GAO Reports Medicare Health Providers Owe $2 Billion

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has reported that Medicare health  providers owe the government over $2 billion in back taxes..New York (ChattahBox) – The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has reported that Medicare health providers owe the government over $2 billion in back taxes.

The GAO investigation revealed that, in total, there are 27,000 establishments consisting of hospitals, nursing homes, etc. that owe the government money in back taxes.

They were all involved in fraud where they collected on Medicare payments in 2006, and then failed to pay the proper taxes for what they collected.

The total Medicare payments put out came out to $402 billion.

The 27,000 represents 6% of all Medicare health providers, serving well over 40 million patients.
