Dr. Andreas Luft from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, as well as researchers from Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center carried out the study.

The study looked at a total o f71 stroke survivors with an average age of 63.

They all began the study roughly 50 months after having a stroke.

The 71 volunteers were split into two groups, with 37 people working out on a treadmill three times each week.

The rest of them, the other 34 volunteers, went through more traditional rehab.

Those who did the treadmill workouts were able to have their walking velocity improve by 51%.

This compared to 11% on the traditional workouts.

Overall, those on the treadmill workouts saw their cardiovascular fitness improve by 18%, compared to 3% for those on the traditional rehab plan.

The treadmill workouts were also found to improve brain function a great deal.

The study has been published in the August 29 issue of the journal Stroke.
