These traditional views on gender roles mean that men who earn more money are more likely to feel that a woman should not be in the workplace, and should instead be at home cooking and raising kids.

The study focused on over 12,000 men and women who were interviewed from 1979 to 2005.

When the study started, they were aged between 14 and 22.

When they were interviewed, four times in total, they were asked what they thought their ideal roles were for all females and males.

They found that men who believed in more traditional gender roles made, on average, $8,500 more each year than men who were not traditional.

On the other hand, women who were more traditional made $1,500 less on average than women with roles that were not traditional.

The men who were not traditional believed more in equality, and having women in the work place.

Breaking it down by region, those living in the U.S. in the Northeast were less likely to have traditional views on gender roles compared to other parts of the country.

Those married and religious were also more likely to believe in traditional gender roles.

The study has been published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.
