Dr. Arto Y. Strandberg of the University of Helsinki carried out the study by looking at a total of roughly 1,700 white men who were born between 1919 and 1934.

They followed the men beginning in the mid 1970s, to check on their health, lifestyle, etc.

They then did a follow-up in the year 2000, and found that 22.4% of them had died.

What they found though was that the non-smokers lived on average, 10 years longer than heavy smokers.

A heavy smoker had 20 cigarettes or more each day.

The non-smokers also had  better physical condition, leading to a higher quality of life.

The study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
